My first bullet journal: An update

30th October 2018

The first post I made about my bullet journal was a good few months ago and I’ve been making such good progress! Thought I would give an update on my progress so far and show more of my spreads.

Has journaling become easier?

It really has! I’ve gotten more used to my system, so it’s faster for me to complete my spreads and get ready for the week ahead. It also helps that I now know exactly which pens or markers to go for, without having to test them out or experiment first.

Have I become lazier too?

Definitely! On weekends where I’m really busy, journaling felt like a chore, because of the effort it takes. But when I have more time to spare, I always enjoy spending the time to make sure my spreads are nice and pretty!

Has it started to feel dull?

I might have reached some sort of plateau in terms of variety when I’m planning my spreads, and also with colours, themes… Because I don’t have many artistic capabilities, I’m quite restricted to just drawing shapes, lines etc. So I’m always leaning towards the same few designs and it’s getting a bit boring… BUT I still really enjoy bullet journaling in general, and I love to see all my tasks and appointments in order on a calendar and weekly spread.

My favourite spreads

Nevertheless, I still love some of these spreads I’ve tried (and repeatedly gone back to). Due to the specific journal I’m using too, I’ve started to favour some colours over others because the pens don’t bleed through the pages as easily. Since starting a bullet journal, I’ve also became a bigger fan of the colour yellow. I even made a personal declaration to myself that yellow is my new favourite colour – that, and the shade of pink you see on my blog banner.

What I’m still trying to improve on

My calligraphy definitely still needs some work – hoping to one day be able to do it with a brush pen instead of filling up the thick strokes with my marker. I’m also not great with illustrating. There is this bad habit I have too though – I’m always too lazy to erase my pencil markings after I’ve completed my spread. If you look a little closer at the top left hand corner of my pages, you can see the markings I’ve made, or even at the edges of my lines. Yes guys, I’m not professional at all.

Will I be starting another bullet journal next year?

Hell yes! If anything, this entire year has convinced me that I can do better in the next one. I’ve started delving into the bujo world of things – like the Pinterest references I look at, the Instagrammers I follow, the YouTube flip-throughs I watch etc. I probably won’t be doing a round-up of my bullet journal at the end of this year, seeing as I’m posting this with just two months left. I’m also not feeling up for a flip-through because there are still too many pages that I’m embarrassed of, so I’d like to keep them to myself until I’m able to create more aesthetically-pleasing ones next year.

If you’d like to see more about my bullet journaling experience, or have any questions about bullet journals, don’t hesitate to let me know! It’s been really fun so far and I’d love to share more here on the blog. Perhaps I’ll do a 2019 set-up post when the new year comes around! 🙂 Stay tuned~
