Hot Take: I only shoot with pretty people

I’m a portrait photographer in Singapore and I’m not ashamed to admit that I only shoot with pretty people. If you’ve looked at my portfolio and thought the photos were nice because my subjects were pretty, you’re absolutely right.

I’m sure most of us can agree objectively on the traits that make someone conventionally attractive – their smile, size of their eyes, face shape, etc. There are also more subjective ways to perceive beauty – humour, voice, personality, etc.

While all you see of my subjects are their physical appearances, I have the privilege of seeing and knowing them in person during our photoshoots. What makes my clients “pretty” goes beyond their physical traits, it’s the energy they bring to the portrait session.

In my opinion, booking a photoshoot for yourself requires plenty of courage. I firmly believe that it’s an act of self-love to put yourself in front of the camera, to show up exactly as you are. It’s an incredibly vulnerable position to be in, and I am always heartened with the strength my clients pull together to gift this experience to themselves.

Most (if not all) of my clients come to the portrait sessions with no prior experience. They are usually unsure of what to expect for the photoshoot, yet they mustered the courage to book a shoot in hopes that they grow in experience through the process.

When people step into a photoshoot with me, I want them to think not only about the final photos they’ll receive, but also on the ideal experience they would like to have. It’s not simply about portraying the best angles of yourself or dressing in your best outfit. Instead, it’s about looking back at the photos and remembering that you had a great time during the photoshoot.

It’s the fact that for once, you didn’t feel overly self-conscious or insecure when you were in front of the camera. You were relaxed, confident, and felt free to express yourself as you are.
